There's another typhoon blowing in, and I'm hoping it won't delay my flight on Tuesday.

I already posted my ode to Hong Kong previously, and now I have pictures! Though I make fun of all the metaphorically thrusting buildings in the notes, I love the Hong Kong skyline, I really do.

Even more random things:

1. I forgot how noisy summers here are; the cicadas hum day and night, the buzz so constant that it becomes background noise after a few minutes. I remember how much I laughed when New Jersey was making a big deal over cicada season there, which apparently only happens once every seventeen years. They can have the cicadas! ( Read more... )

Random things about Taiwan:

1. I am grateful beyond expression that most bathrooms in Taiwan now come with toilet paper. Some even come with toilet seat covers! Still more amazing is the fact that people now seem to be sitting on the toilet seats as opposed to squatting on them and leaving the dirty marks of their shoes on the toilet seats.

I am very proud of myself! Lately I have been consuming all-Chinese media in terms of TV and reading, with the exception of the internet! One hopes that my Chinese is improving marginally, or at least that I am recovering some long-forgotten vocabulary. And better yet, I got a membership card at a local book rental store-book rental stores here ( Read more... )

So far, I have very little to do here save eat and watch TV. I've also been going to calligraphy lessons and cooking lessons with my mom, both of which are very fun, although my calligraphy is still pretty ugly. For cooking, we learned how to make Dong Po pork, salty eggs with pumpkin, pipa tofu, some stewed meat, winter melon tomato soup, and bao ( Read more... )

1. I have almost convinced my dad that he wants to give me tiny laptop, since it's not like he uses it anyway. Sadly, tiny laptop's trackpad right click button is broken, which is not good. It works with a mouse, but that will cut down slightly on portability. On the other hand, getting fairly good at typing on it now...
